Where do I stand?
When organizations and individuals decide they want to censor a book, movie or any print literature, they are hindering our society from learning and expanding their creativity. One of the first books we read in our class was Annie On My Mind. Even though I know several homosexual couples, it really showed me the love and affection these two girls had, and it reminded me of the first time I met my husband. Each of us (Annie and I) shared the same types of feelings even though we have different sexual orientations. In my opinion it is not appropriate to censor what we read or what we watch. As a parent it is my decision to determine what my child will read (for leisure) and watch on TV, or see in the movie theater, not some group that tries to push it's morals and beliefs on me. Understanding that schools have to abide by certain politics I get that they cannot let the teacher pick just any book to have the students read, but as long as my child receives an education from whatever book they are reading, then I am OK with that. I think as a whole society really does need to have an open mind, not only when it comes to books that are available to us, but understand the reasons why people try to challenge or ban books. We need to assume that it's done with good intentions and not become hostile when someone challenges or bans a book. I don't agree with it, but I won't get upset or mad at someone who does.
